The Hissican National Anthem

Well, sort of!

Sir Edward Pussycat demonstrates purring.

We don't know why cats purr!

Scientific studies and simple observation have found that cats purr under a variety of conditions.

Common knowledge assumes it is because they are happy, but cats have been found purring while giving birth, and even when dying!

No one knows exactly how or why a cat purrs, but we do know that they often purr when they are in a safe and happy situation (such as on your lap), so we assume it is a sign of their contentment.

Science cannot measure happiness. But that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

A cat's purr is individual, no two cats purr the same way. Some purr very loudly, with a deep rumble, and others purr very slightly, hardly noticeable at all.

The BIG cats (lions and tigers and bears, oh my!...wait, a bear isn't a cat... ) don't purr at all. They growl.

If you would like to know more about cat purrs, the Internet can help! Here's a great resource for answers to all your questions, not just those about cats:

Ask Jeeves

Jeeves is a search engine that can answer actual questions, sort of. Just go there and type in a question, such as "Why do cats purr?" and Jeeves will come up with some interesting Web pages that address your question!

But, currently, you are still trapped in this adventure and must return to the Matrix of Alternative Time, which even Jeeves doesn't understand. So, you'll have to follow Clyde to escape. Just jump into the time rings to enter the Time Vortex!
